چکیده

Trilateration techniques for position estimation use distances measurements in order to determine the unknown location of a mobile user. In this paper, a Time of Arrival (ToA) based method for estimating distance in an IEEE 802.11b network is presented. This method uses the RTS/CTS handshake and an external time counter for computing the Round Trip Time (RTT) and estimate the ToA. The system designed is tested in several real environments distinguishing line-of-sight (LOS) from non line-of-sight scenarios. By means of a linear regression of RTT measurements one meter accuracy is achieved for the LOS scenario. Keywords—Distance estimation, IEEE 802.11, indoor location, Round Trip Time, Time of Arrival.

The Effect of Disengaging RTS/CTS Dialogue in IEEE 802.11 MAC Protocol

In this paper, we study the effect of using or disengaging the RTS/CTS dialogue in IEEE 802.11 DCF MAC protocol incorporating the realistic condition under which carrier sensing, transmission and interference ranges are distinctively different. We present an algorithm that is employed independently by each network node, under which each node adaptively engages or disengages the RTS/CTS dialogue...

Improving performance through optimization of the RTS/CTS mechanism in IEEE 802.11 Wireless LANs

IEEE 802.11 Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol employs two techniques for packet transmission; the basic access scheme and the RTS/CTS reservation scheme. In this paper, we carry out an analysis in order to derive an all-purpose expression for the threshold value, which determines when the RTS/CTS scheme should be employed, under ideal channel conditions without the presence of hidden station...

WiFi Localization Based on IEEE 802.11 RTS/CTS Mechanism

Location Based Services are providing one of the fastest growing market segments today. While the most common technique for location determination is GPS, several alternative approaches have been proposed for Wi-Fi environments, based on time of flight, signal strength, etc. Time based techniques not only require accurate timestamping mechanisms, but also precise and synchronized clocks, which ...

Performance analysis of CSMA and IEEE 802.11 in Wireless Sensor Networks using GloMoSim and IEEE 802.11as a gimmick

Since its birth wireless communication became an indispensible part of the modern society. One major area that has a gigantic impact on the performance of wireless sensor networks (WSNs) is the Medium Access Control (MAC) layer. Many random access protocols exist in wireless sensor networks. Some of these protocols include Carrier Sense Multiple Access (CSMA), Multiple Access with Collision Avo...
